Marine Steel Stern Roller | Reinforced Fabricated Design for Tugboats and AHTS
Product Overview
The marine steel stern roller is a custom-built aft-deck and stern-frame component for towing, anchor-handling, cable deployment, and related marine operations. It provides a controlled rolling contact surface as wire rope, synthetic rope, pennant wire, cable, or anchor chain passes over the vessel stern, helping reduce sliding friction and local wear on both the line and the stern structure.
Unlike a deck-mounted mooring roller or pedestal fairlead, the stern roller is integrated into the vessel's aft working structure for towing and anchor-handling line travel over the stern. During project engineering, finite element analysis is performed against the confirmed load cases to review the roller shell, internal diaphragms, shaft arrangement, end supports, bearing reactions, and foundation load transfer. Two rotational arrangements are available: a stationary shaft with the roller rotating around it, or an integrated rotating assembly in which the shaft and roller rotate together. Water-lubricated or oil-lubricated systems can be selected according to load, sealing, maintenance, operating environment, and project approval requirements.

Selection & Inquiry Guide
Step 1: Confirm vessel type and duty: tugboat, AHTS, towing vessel, anchor-handling vessel, salvage vessel, or cable-laying workboat.
Step 2: Provide the maximum operating line or chain tension, winch brake holding load, dynamic load basis, side lead, wrap angle, rope / wire / chain size, and minimum allowable bend radius.
Step 3: Confirm available stern width, roller centerline, deck and transom geometry, foundation arrangement, and the required shaft arrangement: stationary shaft with rotating roller, or shaft and roller rotating together.
Step 4: Select straight, waisted, or grooved roller profile and confirm the expected contact medium, including wire rope, synthetic rope, pennant wire, cable, or anchor chain.
Step 5: Confirm water lubrication or oil lubrication, bearing / bush type, sealing arrangement, lubrication supply method, inspection access, shaft-removal space, coating system, and corrosion-protection requirement.
Step 6: Confirm finite element analysis load cases and reporting scope, NDT method and extent, dimensional inspection, load-test requirement, material traceability, class society, witness points, and certificate scope before quotation.
Step 7: Provide quantity, vessel GA / stern drawing, required delivery time, destination, transport limits, installation plan, and reference photos if available.
Structure
Fabricated steel roller shell | Internal diaphragms and stiffeners | Stationary-shaft or rotating-shaft arrangement | End supports | Bearing or bush assemblies | Water- or oil-lubrication system | Sealing and inspection access | Stern foundation interface
Structural, Bearing & Installation Advantages
Custom Attributes
How It Works
Towing line, wire, cable, or chain approaches the stern → The roller rotates around a stationary shaft, or the roller and shaft rotate together → Water- or oil-lubricated bearings / bushes support the selected rotational arrangement → Rolling contact guides the load over the stern edge → Reactions pass through the end supports into the reinforced stern foundation
Applications
Anchor handling tug supply vessels (AHTS) | Tugboats | Towing vessels | Anchor-handling vessels | Offshore support and construction vessels | Salvage vessels | Cable-laying workboats | Multi-purpose engineering vessels
Certifications & Advantages
Material certificates, NDT reports, dimensional records, maker documentation, class inspection, and load-test documentation can be arranged according to the approved project specification and order scope. Certificate availability is subject to material traceability, inspection witnessing, class approval procedure, and agreed test requirements.
Certification: CCS, NK, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, KR, IRS, RS, RINA, CRS, Makers Test Certificate.

FAQ
Q1: How should the stern roller design load be selected?
A1: The design basis should include the specified maximum line or chain tension, winch brake holding load, wrap angle, side lead, dynamic effects, operational load cases, bearing reactions, and foundation reactions. Finite element analysis is then performed using the confirmed load cases to review stress, deformation, and load transfer. A stern roller line-load rating should not be presented as a lifting SWL.
Q2: What are the available shaft and lubrication arrangements?
A2: The roller can rotate around a stationary shaft, or the shaft and roller can rotate together as one assembly. Either arrangement can be engineered with water lubrication or oil lubrication. The final combination depends on load, bearing or bush design, sealing, operating environment, maintenance access, and approved project requirements.
Q3: What information is required for a firm quotation?
A3: Provide the vessel stern GA, operating duty, line or chain specification, maximum load and winch brake holding load, wrap and side-lead angles, required roller dimensions and profile, preferred shaft arrangement, water- or oil-lubrication requirement, material grades, foundation details, FEA and class requirements, inspection scope, quantity, destination, and delivery schedule.
