DIN 81915 Type D Deck Mounted Cast Steel Horn Chock | Ship Mooring and Towing

Product Overview

The DIN 81915 Type D chock is a deck-mounted multi-purpose rope guide for ship mooring and towing arrangements. Its closed cast-steel body provides a defined rope passage with rounded contact surfaces, while the two Type D horn pieces distinguish it from the Type C configuration and help retain the line within the intended lead area.

DIN Media lists DIN 81915:1998-08 as the current edition under the title Multi-purpose chocks. The available parameter table covers nominal sizes 1 to 32, SWL values from 10 to 320 kN, and cast-steel weights from 19.5 to 840 kg. Because horn-piece weights are stated only for sizes 1 to 8 in the available table, the exact Type D configuration for larger sizes should be confirmed against the controlled standard drawing before quotation or production.

Quick Specifications

  • Standard and type: DIN 81915:1998-08 Type D → current German multi-purpose chock standard with a deck-mounted horn configuration.
  • Application positions: bow, stern, ship side, or towing station → selected according to the vessel mooring and towing arrangement.
  • Nominal size range: 1 / 2 / 3 / 5 / 8 / 12 / 20 / 32 → available table range; Type D horn details for larger sizes require confirmation.
  • Standard SWL range: 10–320 kN → fitting rating must not be treated as the capacity of the deck foundation or complete towing system.
  • Cast-steel weight: 19.5–840 kg → based on the GS column; the 18 kg minimum belongs to the separate GGG material column.
  • Type D horn arrangement: two horn pieces → helps control the rope path compared with the plain Type C opening.
  • Material options: cast C-Mn steel, cast stainless steel, or special steel → exact grade and low-temperature requirement to be confirmed.
  • Surface treatment: Sa 2.5 blasting + epoxy shop primer as reference → final coating or polished stainless finish follows the project specification.

Selection & Inquiry Guide

Step 1: Confirm DIN 81915 Type D, nominal size, required SWL, and whether the quotation is for a newbuilding or replacement project.

Step 2: Provide rope type, diameter, MBL, expected lead angles, and towing or mooring duty. Rope MBL must not be stated as the chock SWL.

Step 3: Confirm installation position, deck opening, foundation geometry, under-deck reinforcement, welding interface, and available access.

Step 4: Confirm material grade, low-temperature or ice-class requirement, surface treatment, and any stainless-steel polishing requirement.

Step 5: Confirm certificate scope before quotation: maker certificate, material certificate, class certificate, NDT, or witness inspection.

Step 6: Provide quantity, vessel type, installation drawing or photo, delivery destination, Incoterms, and required delivery time.

Structure

Cast steel chock body | Closed rope opening | Rounded rope-contact radii | Two Type D horn pieces | Deck-welded base | Welding interface | Specified surface treatment

Casting, Installation & Engineering Advantages

  • Type D adds two horn pieces to the basic closed-chock arrangement, giving the deck fitting a clearer rope-retaining geometry than the Type C configuration.
  • Rounded rope-contact surfaces should be dressed and smoothed after casting to reduce sharp local contact and unnecessary abrasion on mooring or towing lines.
  • Casting quality, dimensional repeatability, horn attachment geometry, weld-adjacent areas, and traceability should be controlled according to the agreed inspection plan.
  • The deck-welded base transfers line force into the supporting structure; deck foundation, under-deck reinforcement, weld details, and load direction must be checked by the shipyard or design office.
  • The stated SWL is the fitting value from the available table. The allowable onboard operating load is limited by the complete arrangement, including the chock, welds, foundation, deck structure, and approved load case.
  • For nominal sizes where the available table does not state horn-piece weight, Type D geometry and supply scope should be confirmed before quotation.

Custom Attributes

  • Standard: DIN 81915:1998-08 → current DIN edition for multi-purpose chocks.
  • Type: Type D → deck-mounted closed chock with two horn pieces compared with Type C.
  • Nominal Size: 1 / 2 / 3 / 5 / 8 / 12 / 20 / 32 → select by required SWL, rope path, and approved vessel drawing.
  • SWL: 10–320 kN → use the standard fitting value and verify the supporting deck structure separately.
  • Material: Cast C-Mn steel as the principal supply option → cast stainless steel or special low-temperature steel subject to confirmation.
  • Installation: Deck welded → foundation, weld detail, deck opening, and under-deck reinforcement must be confirmed.
  • Surface Treatment: Sa 2.5 blasting + epoxy shop primer as reference → final system follows the vessel coating specification.
  • Certificate Requirement: Available according to project requirement → class approval and witness scope must be agreed before production.

How It Works

Rope approaches the deck chock → Rope enters the closed opening between the Type D horns → Rounded contact surfaces guide the lead → Local line force is transferred through the cast body and welded base → Deck foundation distributes the load into the ship structure

Applications

Bow mooring stations | Stern mooring stations | Ship-side rope leads | Towing stations | Tugboats | Cargo vessels | Tankers | Workboats | Newbuilding and replacement projects

Certifications & Advantages

Certificates and inspections can be arranged according to project requirement, material traceability, approved drawing, and classification society procedure. They are not assumed to be included unless stated in the purchase order.

Certification: CCS, NK, BV, ABS, DNV, LR, KR, IRS, RS, RINA, CRS, Makers Test Certificate.

FAQ

Q1: What is the main difference between DIN 81915 Type D and Type C?

A1: Type D includes two horn pieces around the rope-entry area, while Type C is the corresponding closed arrangement without these horns. The horns help keep the rope within the intended lead area, but the exact configuration must follow the standard or approved drawing.

Q2: How should the correct nominal size be selected?

A2: Select by required chock SWL, rope type and diameter, rope MBL, lead angles, deck layout, installation space, and the approved mooring or towing calculation. Do not select only by product weight or substitute rope MBL for chock SWL.

Q3: Are all nominal sizes 1 to 32 available as Type D?

A3: The available table lists sizes 1 to 32, but separate horn-piece weights are shown only for sizes 1 to 8. Type D geometry, horn supply, and dimensional data for sizes 12, 20, and 32 should therefore be confirmed before quotation.
