Ferrosilicon is an alloy composed primarily of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si). It is produced by smelting a mixture of iron ore, coke (carbon), and silica in an electric arc furnace. The silicon content in ferrosilicon can range from about 15% to 90%, depending on the intended application.
Ferro Silicon Function
Desulfurizing agent: In some instances, ferrosilicon can be utilized as a desulfurizing agent. It reacts with sulfur present in molten metal, forming a slag that can be removed, thereby reducing the sulfur content in the final product.
Magnetostrictive applications: Ferrosilicon with specific compositions, such as those containing high silicon content, is used in magnetostrictive applications. These applications include devices like magnetostrictive sensors and actuators, which convert magnetic fields into mechanical strain.
Deoxidizer: Ferrosilicon is commonly used as a deoxidizing agent in the production of steel and cast iron. It reacts with oxygen and other impurities present in the molten metal, reducing them and preventing the formation of defects in the final product.
