Ferrosilicon is predominantly composed of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si), forming an alloy that is created through the smelting of a combination of iron ore, coke (carbon), and silica in an electric arc furnace. The silicon content of ferrosilicon varies between approximately 15% and 90%, depending on the specific purpose for which it is being used.
Ferro Silicon Function
Desulfurizing agent: In some instances, ferrosilicon can be utilized as a desulfurizing agent. It reacts with sulfur present in molten metal, forming a slag that can be removed, thereby reducing the sulfur content in the final product.
Inoculant: Ferrosilicon can act as an inoculant in the casting process. It helps control the formation and distribution of graphite flakes in cast iron, improving its mechanical properties and reducing brittleness.
Deoxidizer: Ferrosilicon is commonly used as a deoxidizing agent in the production of steel and cast iron. It reacts with oxygen and other impurities present in the molten metal, reducing them and preventing the formation of defects in the final product.

1. In the steel making field, Ferro Silicon is used as deoxidizer and alloying agent to precipit and diffuse deoxidation.Adding a certain amount silicon of fe-si to the steel can obviously improve the strength ,hardness ,elasticity and permeability of steel.
2 ,In the iron casting,it is used as ball mile agent and alloying agent especially in the nodular iron casting, Adding ferrosilicon to cast iron ,it can prevent the formation of carbide and promote the precipitation of graphite and the nodulizing.then the mechanical capacity can be the same of steel's.
3. Ferro silicon is used as a reducing agent in the production of ferroalloys
