Q: Will a fan clutch fault cause the engine fault light to come on? Why?
A: Not necessarily, it depends on the type: If the electronic temperature-controlled clutch fails (such as sensor failure, ECU control abnormality), it will trigger an engine fault code, and then the fault light will come on – because the electronic system will feed back the working status to the ECU in real time, and abnormal signals will be judged as faults; the mechanical temperature-controlled clutch has no electronic signal transmission, even if wear or oil leakage occurs, it will not directly trigger the fault light. Only when the fault causes the engine to overheat (water temperature exceeds the warning value), the water temperature warning light will come on, not the engine fault light.
Q: When the vehicle idles for a long time, the fan clutch switches speed frequently. Is this a normal phenomenon?
A: If the switching frequency is reasonable (e.g., once every few minutes) and the water temperature is stable in the normal range (about 85-95℃), it is a normal phenomenon. During long-term idling, the engine heat dissipation efficiency is low, and the water temperature is prone to fluctuation. The clutch will automatically adjust through the cycle of "low-speed heat dissipation - temperature drop - speed reduction" to maintain stable water temperature; however, if the switching is too frequent (e.g., once every tens of seconds), or accompanied by fluctuating water temperature, it may be a fault – mostly due to decreased sensitivity of the temperature sensor (electronic type) or aging of the paraffin element (mechanical type), causing the clutch to misjudge the temperature signal.
Q: What are the symptoms of a failed fan clutch?
A: A failed fan clutch may show several symptoms, such as engine overheating—this happens when the fan doesn’t rotate or runs at a low speed, failing to dissipate heat effectively. Another symptom is increased noise, as the fan might get stuck in a high-speed rotation mode even when the engine is cool. Additionally, fuel consumption may rise due to the fan consuming excessive power unnecessarily. In some cases, the air conditioning cooling effect may decrease because the engine’s high temperature affects the AC system’s efficiency. Unusual vibrations from the fan area can also indicate internal component wear or failure in the clutch.
