Anionic PAM Emulsion for Gold Tailings Settling and Water Recovery

Improve gold tailings settling, thickener overflow clarity, and controlled water recovery with oil-based EA 6520 and water-based EWA 7520 screening options.

Very-High Molecular Weight Fine Gold Tailings Bridging Leach-Chemistry-Aware Testing Controlled Water Recovery

Application Snapshot

  • Product Anionic PAM Emulsion
  • Grades EA 6520 and EWA 7520
  • Primary Role Gold tailings settling, thickening, and overflow clarification
  • Selection Ore-, leach-, water-, and thickener-specific trials
Product Introduction

Gold Tailings Require Process-Specific Solid-Liquid Separation

Gold tailings can contain finely ground quartz, clays, sulfides, carbonaceous material, and residual process reagents. Cyanide or alternative leach circuits also impose strict water-quality and safety controls.

Polymer is selected to improve solid-liquid separation. It does not replace cyanide detoxification or treatment for dissolved contaminants, and testing must preserve the actual process-water chemistry.

Blufloc APAM Emulsion

Blufloc anionic PAM emulsion promotes settling and thickening of gold mine tailings for clearer overflow and improved water recovery.

Grade selection considers ore mineralogy, grinding size, leach chemistry, residual reagents, thickener conditions, and downstream water reuse.

Application Challenges

Where Gold Tailings Separation Becomes Difficult

Fine grinding, mineral surfaces, dissolved ions, process reagents, feedwell energy, and water-reuse limits all influence settling, clarification, and underflow control.

01

Very Fine Grind

Finely ground quartz, clay, sulfide, and carbonaceous particles may remain suspended and settle slowly.

02

Residual Reagents

Leach, flotation, or detoxification reagents can change surface chemistry and polymer adsorption.

03

Controlled Water Reuse

Clear-looking overflow may still fail reuse limits because of dissolved species or residual reagents.

04

High-Density Tailings Duty

Floc must survive feedwell shear while supporting the required underflow and storage conditions.

Treatment Mechanism

How the PAM Emulsion Works

Very-high-molecular-weight APAM bridges destabilized mineral particles into larger aggregates. The optimum anionic degree depends on mineral surfaces, hardness, salinity, and residual reagents. Floc strength must match feedwell and thickener shear.

Step 1

Prepare and Distribute

Activate and dilute the selected emulsion, then distribute it evenly at the intended process stage.

Step 2

Bridge Gold Tailings Fines

Long APAM chains adsorb onto multiple mineral particles and build larger, faster-settling floc.

Step 3

Separate and Verify

Preserve floc through the thickener and verify both solids separation and recovered-water chemistry.

Important: The grades below are starting candidates, not a fixed prescription. Final selection and dosage require representative laboratory and plant trials under site-approved reagent safety procedures. APAM does not replace cyanide detoxification or dissolved-contaminant treatment.
Recommended Grades

Recommended Blufloc Grades

Compare candidates at equal active polymer mass using representative tailings after the actual process stage where polymer will be applied.

Grade Base Molecular Weight Charge Suggested Screening Role
EA 6520 Oil-based Very High High anionic Primary high-bridging candidate for fine gold tailings
EWA 7520 Water-based Very High Medium anionic Water-based comparator for different mineral and water chemistry

The product pages classify the cationic EC and EWC series as high molecular weight and the anionic EA and EWA grades as very high molecular weight. Confirm exact commercial specification limits, active content, viscosity, shelf life, and preparation instructions on the current grade-specific TDS and order specification.

Product Advantages

Strong Bridging with Process-Specific Testing

  • Strong bridging for finely ground gold tailings
  • Potential for clearer overflow and improved water recovery
  • Liquid dosing for continuous metallurgical operation
  • Oil-based and water-based carrier and charge options
  • Testing aligned with leach and detoxification conditions
Application Process

Preserve the Actual Gold-Process Water Chemistry

1

Sample the Actual Process Stage

Use representative tailings after the real process stage where the polymer will be applied.

2

Maintain Chemistry and Safety

Preserve process-water chemistry and follow all site cyanide, reagent, containment, and PPE procedures.

3

Screen Dose and Mixing

Compare settling, clarity, floc strength, and compaction using repeatable thickener-like mixing.

4

Check Recovered-Water Quality

Assess reuse suitability against site chemistry requirements rather than relying on appearance alone.

5

Pilot Across Ore Regimes

Validate the preferred grade under realistic ore blend, leach conditions, throughput, and hydraulic loading.

Product Selection Guidance

Select Separately for Each Ore and Process-Water Regime

EA 6520 is the main high-anionic screen for very fine gold tailings. EWA 7520 provides a medium-anionic water-based comparison. Major changes in ore mineralogy, grind, leach chemistry, detoxification conditions, or recycled water should trigger a separate grade and dose review.

Compare Total Operating Cost

Neat-emulsion price per kilogram can be misleading. Compare on active polymer mass and include preparation efficiency, dose, equipment throughput, overflow chemistry, underflow quality, water reuse, and downstream disposal cost.

  • Active polymer dose expressed in grams per ton of dry solids
  • Settling capacity, overflow clarity, chemistry, and reuse suitability
  • Underflow density, pumping behavior, and tailings-storage requirements
  • Preparation, equipment, maintenance, detoxification, and disposal cost
Trial Data

Operating Indicators to Record

  • Settling rate
  • Overflow turbidity and chemistry
  • Underflow density
  • Polymer grams per ton
  • Water-reuse suitability
Troubleshooting

Clear Overflow Is Not Automatically Reusable Water

!

Separate Suspended-Solids Problems from Dissolved Chemistry

If overflow looks clear but cannot be reused, identify dissolved species or residual reagents. Flocculation addresses suspended solids; it does not remove every dissolved contaminant or replace the site's cyanide control and detoxification process.

If floc breaks in the feedwell, optimize activation, dilution, addition points, distribution, and mixing energy before increasing the dose or changing molecular-weight demand.

Packaging

25 kg Container
200 kg Plastic Drum
1000 kg IBC
Safe Handling

Storage and Handling

Keep the package sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated area. Protect it from direct sunlight, freezing, and excessive heat.

Follow the grade-specific TDS and SDS for shelf life, handling limits, and transport classification. Polymer spills can make floors extremely slippery and should be contained and cleaned promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gold Tailings Flocculation FAQ

Does APAM remove cyanide?

No. APAM is a flocculant for suspended solids. Cyanide management requires the site's dedicated control, monitoring, and detoxification process.

Can recovered water be reused immediately?

Only if it meets the site's process, safety, and environmental requirements. Visual clarity alone does not confirm that dissolved species or residual reagents are acceptable.

Does ore blend affect polymer choice?

Yes. Clay, sulfides, carbonaceous material, grind size, hardness, salinity, and reagent conditions can change polymer adsorption, dose, floc strength, and settling.

How should gold tailings tests be performed safely?

Use site-approved sampling, containment, PPE, reagent-handling, and waste procedures. Review the product SDS and the site's cyanide or alternative-leach safety requirements.

EA and EWA Screening

Match the APAM Grade to Gold Ore, Leach Chemistry, and Water-Reuse Duty

Screen EA 6520 and EWA 7520 with representative gold tailings, controlled carrier-specific preparation, actual process-water chemistry, and thickener-like mixing. Confirm the preferred grade using settling, overflow chemistry, underflow density, reuse suitability, safety, and total cost.
