ASTM B338 Grade 2 Seamless Titanium Tube is the premier choice for heat transfer equipment handling seawater, brackish water, or aggressive chloride-laden chemicals. Its combination of reliable corrosion resistance, light weight, and seamless integrity makes it a long-term, low-maintenance solution for critical cooling and process applications.
Comparison: Titanium Gr.2 vs. Alternatives
Vs. Copper-Nickel (90/10 or 70/30): Ti Gr.2 offers far superior resistance to high-velocity seawater erosion and pitting. However, CuNi has better biofouling properties in stagnant water and is cheaper.
Vs. Stainless Steel (316L): In chlorides (seawater), 316L will eventually pit or suffer SCC. Titanium Gr.2 will not. Titanium is also immune to MIC (Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion).
Vs. Titanium Grade 1: Gr.1 is softer and more formable (used for tubing in Gulf of Mexico due to extreme formability needs), but Gr.2 is stronger, allowing higher pressure ratings.
Vs. Titanium Grade 5 (6Al-4V): Gr.5 is much stronger but harder to form and weld for tube applications. Gr.2 is preferred for corrosion resistance and fabricability.

Key Properties of ASME SB338 Grade 2 Seamless Titanium Tube
Corrosion Resistance: This is the primary reason to choose Gr.2. It is virtually immune to attack by seawater, chlorides, and brackish water up to elevated temperatures. It withstands pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) where stainless steels fail.
Strength: Moderate. It is stronger than pure copper and most copper-nickel alloys, but weaker than stainless steel (allowing for thinner walls in some applications).
Lightweight: Density is approximately 4.51 g/cm³, about 40% lighter than steel and 50% lighter than copper-nickel.
Biofouling Resistance: The oxide layer is toxic to marine organisms, preventing barnacles and mussels from attaching, which keeps heat transfer efficient.
