Common Grades
Austenitic Grades

316/316L: Known for superior resistance to chloride-induced corrosion, ideal for marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical applications. 316L reduces intergranular corrosion risk.
310S: Features outstanding heat resistance up to 1200°C, suitable for furnace parts and high-temperature engineering.
Martensitic Grades
410: A hardenable grade with moderate corrosion resistance, commonly used in applications requiring mechanical strength, such as shafts and valves.
420: Higher carbon content than 410, providing greater hardness after heat treatment, suitable for cutlery and surgical instruments.
Ferritic Grades
430: Magnetic, cost-effective, and resistant to atmospheric corrosion, often used in architectural trims and automotive components.
Standards Compliance
These round bars strictly adhere to ASTM A276/A276M, a standard specifying stainless steel bars and shapes for general engineering and industrial applications. Key parameters include:
Chemical composition (carbon, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, etc.)
Surface finish and dimensional tolerances for hot-rolled products.
They are also compliant with equivalent international standards such as EN 10088-3 and JIS G4303 for global usability.

Heat Treatment & Processing Methods
Heat Treatment
Solid Solution Treatment: The primary process involves heating the bar to 1010-1150°C (depending on grade), followed by rapid cooling (water quenching) to dissolve intermetallic compounds and achieve a uniform austenitic structure. This improves ductility and corrosion resistance.
Annealing (for Martensitic Grades): Heating to 750-800°C and air-cooling to relieve stress and improve machinability.
Precipitation Hardening (for PH Grades, though not standard in A276): Some specialized variants may undergo aging treatment to enhance strength.
Processing Capabilities
Machining: Suitable for conventional machining operations (turning, milling, drilling). Use of high-speed steel or carbide tools with proper lubrication is recommended to minimize work-hardening.
Welding: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) are preferred. Post-weld cleaning is essential for austenitic grades to remove oxide residues.
Forming: Austenitic grades can be cold-formed (bending, stamping) due to high ductility; martensitic grades require pre-heating to prevent cracking.
Surface Finishing: Pickling or blasting to remove scale from hot-rolled surfaces; polishing for aesthetic or hygiene-critical applications (e.g., food industry).
