Cut-through testing machine for automotive wires and cables
Scope of application: suitable for low-voltage primary cables for ground vehicle electrical systems with rated DC voltage of 60V (AC 25V) or below. The test in this paper is to test the quality of the cable under the action of limited fluid and physical stress.

Cut-through test: Strip a 25mm (1in) section of insulation from one end of a 900 mm (36 in) long finished cable sample, and then rest the sample horizontally on a 3 mm (1/8 in) diameter lever so that the sample is tensioned but not stretched. Adjust the counterweight so that no force is applied to the sample until the weight is applied to one end of a lever with a mechanical efficiency of 10. The applied weight is then continuously increased at a rate of 2.3 kg/min (51 b/min) so that an increasing force is applied to the sample through the steel drill. At the moment when the insulation is cut, the 3mm (1/8in) lever will come into contact with the conductor and the test will be stopped. The applied weight should be recorded, and after each reading, the specimen should move approximately 50 mm (2 in) and turn 90° clockwise. Four readings should be taken per sample, the average of which is defined as the cut-through resistance of the cable under test.
