Thermoplastic paint is a type of coating material that is applied in a molten state and solidifies as it cools. It is a durable, fast-drying, and weather-resistant paint primarily used for road markings, but also for various industrial, commercial, and recreational applications. The paint’s thermoplastic properties make it ideal for areas that require markings to withstand heavy traffic, weather changes, and high wear.

1. Composition

• Resins: The primary binder that holds the paint together and adheres to the road surface. Typically, synthetic resins are used to provide good adhesion and resistance to wear.
• Pigments: Commonly titanium dioxide (for white markings) and lead-free pigments for yellow road markings. These pigments provide the bright colors needed for visibility and road safety.
• Glass Beads: Retro-reflective beads are embedded in the paint to enhance visibility, especially at night or in low-light conditions. These beads reflect headlights back to the driver, improving road safety.
• Fillers: Materials like calcium carbonate, silica, or other minerals are added to improve the physical properties of the paint, such as its texture, durability, and wear resistance.
• Additives: These may include anti-UV agents, plasticizers, and stabilizers to improve the longevity and performance of the material.

• Application Temperature: Typically applied at 180–220°C.
• Fast Drying: The paint solidifies as it cools, usually within minutes, allowing for fast reopening of roads.
• Durability: Resistant to wear from traffic, weather, and UV exposure.

Applications of Thermoplastic Paint:

1. Road Markings:

   • Lane lines, pedestrian crossings, traffic symbols, and other road markings are often made with thermoplastic paint. The durability and visibility of these markings ensure safety and guidance on busy roads and highways.

2. Parking Lots:

   • It is frequently used for parking space lines, handicap symbols, directional arrows, and other markings in parking lots, both indoors and outdoors.

3. Airport Runways and Taxiways:

   • Thermoplastic paint is used in airports for runway markings, taxiway lines, hold position markings, and other crucial signage because of its high durability and resistance to wear from aircraft traffic.

4. Industrial and Commercial Areas:

   • It is used to mark aisles, safety zones, storage areas, and restricted zones in warehouses, factories, and distribution centers.

5. Sports Courts:

   • It is commonly applied to mark lines on basketball courts, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and other outdoor recreational surfaces.

6. Bicycle Lanes and Pedestrian Pathways:

   • Used to create visible bike lanes, pedestrian paths, and safety zones in urban infrastructure.

Detailed Process of Hot Melt Road Marking Paint Construction

1. Road Cleaning

Before operation, the nearby area must be cleaned to ensure that there are no impurities such as oil, water, fallen leaves, weeds, ect., so as not to affect the adhesion effect, flatness and reflection effect of the line.

2. Set the Point and Mark Line

In the process of sampling, the calculation and measurement must be carried out in strict accordance with the construction drawings. Measure the several lanes that need to be drawn on the road, set the point, and then mark it with a stone pen. Use titanium dioxide powder to glue the rope for the elastic line. After the rope is removed, it will be corrected and improved to ensure that the line shape is clear and accurate.

3. Apply the Primer

The lower coating is a common binder in hot melt marking construction. It is applied to the highway road surface, which can make the hot melt coating better adhere to the road surface.

4. Spray the Paint

Before construction, first check the relevant coating equipment. Then heat the paint.

When the trolley moves forward, the paint will form a coating film on the road, and a layer of glass beads should be sprinkled on the coating film during the coating process.

When the trolley moves forward, take the reference line as the ruler, control the thickness and width of the line, and ensure the coordination, clarity and smoothness of the line connection between the straight line and the curve.

Note: During the coating process, in order to avoid the sedimentation and separation of the paint, it is necessary to stir the paint frequently.

5. Check and Correct

After the coating is completed, check and correct the line shape, check the spread of glass beads, etc.

After confirming that it is correct, the construction site will be cleaned up.

After the line is dried and hardened, the relevant construction equipment can be transferred, the safety facilities can be dismantled, and the traffic can be opened.
