Thermoplastic road marking paint, also known as hot melt marking paint, is a widely used material for creating durable, high-visibility road markings. Below is a concise overview based on available information:
Composition
  • Synthetic Resin: Provides thermoplasticity, enabling fast drying and strong adhesion to road surfaces. Non-polymeric resins, like colophony, are also used.
  • Glass Beads: Added for retro-reflectivity, improving visibility at night by reflecting vehicle headlights. Bead sizes typically range from 0.1-1.4 mm.
  • Pigments: Common colors are white (using titanium dioxide for UV resistance) and yellow (organic pigments like Pigment Yellow 65, 74, or 83). Other colors are available for specific applications.
  • Fillers: Fine fillers (e.g., calcium carbonate) and coarse fillers (e.g., sand) enhance mechanical strength, wear resistance, and surface texture.
  • Additives: Improve plasticity, resistance to subsidence, pollution, and color fading. Anti-skid aggregates can be added for better traction.
Application Methods
  • Hot-Applied: Powdered thermoplastic is heated to ~200°C (392°F) in a kettle and applied via spray, screed, or extrusion for road markings.
  • Preformed Thermoplastic: Pre-cut shapes (e.g., arrows, letters) are heated with a torch or heat gun and bonded to surfaces, ideal for symbols or small areas.
  • Liquid Thermoplastic: Cold-applied, waterborne versions are sprayed for easier application, though less common.
  • Surface Prep: Surfaces must be clean, dry, and sometimes primed (e.g., for concrete or old asphalt) to ensure adhesion.
