2. Chemical composition

 

Opal glass is primarily composed of silica (SiO2), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), and limestone (CaCO3). Silica serves as the main component, contributing to the basic structure of the glass, while sodium carbonate acts as a flux, lowering the melting point of silica. Limestone lends durability to the finished product. However, the true character of opal glass comes from the addition of an opacifier, most commonly bone ash (Ca3(PO4)2), tin oxide (SnO2), or arsenic (As2O3).

 

 

3. Manufacturing process

 

The production of opal glass is similar to that of common glass types, with the opacifier being the distinguishing factor. The raw materials are melted together at high temperatures, typically around 1400 to 1600 degrees Celsius, to form a homogeneous molten glass mixture. The opacifier is added during this stage to scatter light passing through the glass, rendering it translucent or opaque rather than clear.

The production of opal glass involves a combination of silica, soda, lime, and other materials, including fluorides and phosphates. These ingredients are melted at high temperatures, and then a special opacifying agent—typically bone ash, cryolite, or tin oxide—is added to give the glass its characteristic opaque, milky-white appearance. This opacifying agent scatters light, preventing it from passing through the glass and creating the desired aesthetic.

Once the molten glass mixture is ready, it can be shaped using various techniques, such as pressing, blowing, or casting. The final product is then annealed to relieve internal stresses and ensure durability.

Cross conveyor is installed in front of annealing lehr for cross conveying the glass product and works with stacker to push them into annealing lehr.

 

  • Stacker

Stacker is used for pushing the glass product from the cross conveyor into annealing lehr.

 

  • Annealing lehr

Annealing lehr can be continuous annealing of tableware, bottles, cans, and other glass products.

 

  • Packing devices
