Tetramethylsilane (TMS) is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula (CH₃)₄Si. It consists of a central silicon atom bonded to four methyl (CH₃) groups. TMS is a volatile liquid that is primarily used as a reference standard in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
In NMR spectroscopy, TMS is commonly used as an internal standard for calibrating chemical shifts. It has a well-defined NMR signal at a specific resonance frequency (0 ppm) relative to which the chemical shifts of other compounds can be measured. TMS is added in small amounts to the sample being analyzed, and its signal serves as a reference point to determine the resonance frequencies of other nuclei in the sample.
TMS is highly stable and inert, which makes it a suitable reference compound in NMR spectroscopy. Its low boiling point and volatility allow it to be easily removed from the sample after analysis. TMS is also non-toxic, non-flammable, and has a low viscosity, which further contributes to its usefulness in NMR experiments.
Outside of NMR spectroscopy, TMS is used as a solvent for certain reactions or as a reagent in organic synthesis. Its methyl groups can be substituted with other functional groups, allowing for the preparation of various organosilicon compounds. TMS is also employed as a protective group for reactive functional groups during chemical transformations.
