The output end of the PLC splitter is arrayed with an optical fiber band (ribbon) and coupled with each output waveguide in the PLC fiber splitter. Each fiber in the optical fiber band is positioned with a V- slot to ensure that all optical waveguides are aligned with the fiber ribbon at one time. The V- groove substrate can be made of monocrystalline silicon through selective wet etching process, and can also be made by quartz glass plate through precise mechanical processing.
Because the fiber array is made of V groove, the precise fiber positioning and high reliability can be realized by special bonding process to meet the different requirements. The package design of thermal expansion coefficient ensures that there is no stress for the fiber array board, high reliability and no fiber displacement at high temperature. Therefore, the high precision V groove and high reliability UV glue are the key technologies in the fabrication of fiber array.
The matrix materials of optical fiber array are quartz glass and heat-resistant glass, but generally use quartz glass plate and precision mechanical to process, and quartz glass is better in reliability, and it is not easy to crack when grinding. The end face polishing angle can also be customized according to the customer's requirements, such as: 90 degrees, 98 degrees, 82 degrees, etc., the color and length of the fiber arrangement can also be customized according to customer’s needs.
As the fiber array is labor-intensive products, many foreign manufacturers already transferred the production process to China. At present, there are a number of domestic manufacturers are able to develop and produce by their own. As for technology research and independent innovation, the development of domestic fiber array technology has also made breakthroughs, such as: high precision U groove, etching manufacturing process with proprietary intellectual property rights, if this technology make break and put into practical production, it will greatly reduce the cost of optical fiber array. And square capillary arrays, which have good characteristics in AWG and single channel arrays.
High reliability UV glue is another key technology in making optical fiber array. The fabrication process of PLC optical splitter has high requirements for optical fiber array. Besides the high accuracy of V groove, the UV glue should have the characteristics of high temperature resistance, high humidity and enough hardness. At present, composite products developed by NTT-AT company in Japan are the most advanced in technology.
