Q: How can I tell if my fan clutch might have failed?
A: The main symptoms include: 1) Significantly increased fuel consumption. 2) Lack of power, especially during acceleration. 3) The cooling fan constantly makes a loud roar, even when the engine is cold. 4) Engine coolant temperature is too high or warms up too slowly. 5) Abnormal whirring, rattling, or grinding noises from the engine bay.

Q: What is the problem if the fan is very loud immediately on a cold start?
A: This is almost a classic sign of a "runaway" or permanently engaged fan clutch fault. It means the clutch cannot disengage and is stuck in full engagement. Causes include: silicone fluid leakage preventing the low torque needed for disengagement; a failed bimetallic spring stuck in the open position; or seized internal bearings.

Q: The engine is clearly overheating, but the fan seems not to be spinning or is weak. What is the reason?
A: This points to insufficient cooling. Possible causes: 1) The clutch has completely failed to engage (silicone fluid completely leaked, valve stuck, electromagnetic coil open circuit). 2) The bimetallic spring's temperature sensing function is faulty and cannot trigger engagement. 3) (For electromagnetic type) Faulty temperature sensor, ECU, or wiring preventing the engagement command from being sent.

Q: Can I turn the fan by hand after the engine is off? What does this indicate?
A: After the engine is completely cool (preferably overnight), you can try. Normal condition: You should be able to turn the fan by hand but will feel noticeable viscous resistance (from the silicone fluid), and it will stop after a rotation or two. Abnormal conditions: 1) If it is completely stuck, the bearings may be seized. 2) If it spins very freely and smoothly with no resistance, the silicone fluid may have severely leaked.
