With the rapid development of battery products, the importance of battery balancing technology is also increasing day by day. For energy storage batteries, battery balancing technology can improve their overall performance, extend service life,
enhance system reliability, optimize energy management, reduce operation and maintenance costs, and promote environmental protection and resource recycling.
However, in the earliest days, before the emergence of battery balancing technology, the inconsistency problem of battery packs was mainly solved by design redundancy, but this is not an efficient method. And with the popularization of lithium-ion batteries,
especially for application scenarios that require high energy density, the consistency problem of battery packs has become one of the problems that must be solved.
Therefore, engineers began to introduce simple resistors in battery packs as a means of balancing. When the voltage of a battery cell exceeds the preset value, the excess power will be consumed through the resistor. This method is called passive balancing.
Although this method has a simple structure and is easy to implement, it is inefficient because it only converts excess power into heat energy and dissipates it instead of effectively reusing it.
In order to solve the problem of inefficiency, active balancing technology began to emerge, which can transfer the energy of high-voltage battery cells to low-voltage battery cells instead of simply consuming it.
Balancing Extends LiFePO4 Battery Life
LiFePO4 battery balancing does extend its life significantly. In fact, if you follow a proper balancing process regularly, you can extend the lifespan of your battery far beyond what manufacturer-rated lifespan. This is not limited to the Lithium Iron Phosphate battery pack. It also applies to many other types of batteries.
