Although most BMSs are equipped with balancer circuits to compensate for minor voltage differences between cells, we often find that more powerful circuits are needed that, in addition to compensating for uneven cell wear and tear over the life of the battery,
can compensate for differences due to manufacturing discrepancies, different initial state of charge or, in the case of previously used cells, their different histories.
The task of the additional balancer is to transfer energy from the stronger cells toward the weaker ones so that they are less stressed, resulting in a higher usable capacity of the pack and a slower rate of its natural loss.
Enerkey has solved this problem by developing a series of active balancers specifically designed to work with the Enerkey BMS. This means that both balancers, the active external one and the passive one in the BMS, can work simultaneously without interfering with each other.
Like the BMS Enerkey, the balancers are produced in a standard version – without the ability to view and set parameters, and in a SMART version, with full monitoring and the ability to set parameters.
