The steel core is sometimes coated with copper, producing such products as copper-clad steel bars (for sole use in vertical grounding electrodes), copper-clad steel tapes, and copper-clad steel wires in both round and stranded forms.
These products can be categorized according to their production processes. They can be produced either by continuous casting or electroplating.
The copper-clad-steel grounding material is cost effective, and much cheaper than the pure copper rod. Its uniform copper layer ensures a high tensile strength, and promises a coating that will not crack or take off when the conductor is bent. This provides high efficiency when reducing the resistance. In fact, the length of the horizontal grounding body can be reduced by 1/3 for the design of the high-resistance section, significantly reducing the excavation amount of the earthwork.
