Introduction:
Calcium oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula of CaO, commonly known as quicklime. Its physical properties are white powder on the surface, grayish white if it is impure, and light yellow or gray if it contains impurities, and it is hygroscopic. Calcium oxide is an alkaline oxide and is sensitive to moisture. It easily absorbs carbon dioxide and moisture from the air. It reacts with water to produce calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and generates a lot of heat, which is corrosive. Calcium oxide is also an inorganic dehydrating agent, which reacts with water to produce calcium hydroxide and can also absorb carbon dioxide. Calcium oxide powder can be added to some special sealants, water-curing adhesives and other systems. Calcium oxide can be used as an analytical reagent, a carbon dioxide absorbent for gas analysis, a spectral analysis reagent, and a high-purity reagent for epitaxy and diffusion processes in semiconductor production, laboratory ammonia drying and alcohol dehydration, etc.
Uses:
It is used as building material, metallurgical flux, the main raw material for making calcium hydroxide and various calcium compounds, and also a cheap alkali in the chemical industry. It is widely used in pesticides, papermaking, food, petrochemicals, leather making, wastewater purification, etc. It can also be used for drying ammonia in laboratories and dehydrating alcohols.
