    Description:

    Our introductory spoon carving course gives you hands on instruction in the art of spoon carving, at the beginning of the course you will learn how to carve a simple wooden spatula in order to get you used to the tools and techniques we use, we then move onto carving a simple, yet elegant spoon, using the methods you have learnt, although you will be working to a basic template, you are also encouraged to be creative in your designs.
    Course content includes;
    Knife & axe safety, cutting and carving techniques using axes, knives & saws.
    Material selection, what to look for and why.
    Hands on carving experience, where you carve your own spoon & spatula.
    This course is run on an informal basis, with plenty of breaks, we also deliberately keep class sizes small, as we feel this offers you a better, more in depth learning experience as we have the time to make sure each student has grasped and understood the subject being taught, it also enables us to monitor our students progress during their time with us more efficiently and means that we can assist those who may need a little extra help, whilst at the same time, not neglecting everybody else on the course.
    Our courses run from April to the end of September each year and are held at outdoor locations near to Ashington & Steyning in West Sussex. We can also course travel to your location to undertake the introduction to Spoon Carving course if preferred.

    What's included in the price?

    All tools and materials are provided for students use along with copious amounts of tea and coffee from the Kelly Kettle and if you are lucky, there might even be some chocolate Hobnobs.

    This course was excellent, I started the day knowing next to nothing about spoon carving or the tools involved, and came out with my very own spoon and knowing all of the information about the tools I needed to know. Had a great days with lots of tea drinking, light hearted conversation and feeling very proud of myself. Throughout the whole course I never felt rushed to move onto the next step, and was allowed to take the course at my own pace and focus on things I found tricky.
    I would most defiantly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn how to start carving spoons, no matter how much you may already know! One of the best courses I've been on by far.

    As a tree surgeon I have far too much wood passing through my hands to not give some of it a happier and longer living destiny than being put through the chipper/shredder.
    I have carved before, but nothing I could be proud of.
    After one day with Sussex Woodsman, I am now carving spoons and spatulas that are not only being used daily, but am now proud to show people.
    I really cannot recommend them highly enough. They are patient (I'm a lefty), helpful, knowledgeable, and didn't lie about the amount of tea!
    If you have ever wondered what it is like to make something from nothing, then this is the course for you.......

    Never carved a spoon in my life before i went on this course, the guys at Sussex Woodsman were very patient, friendly and accommodating to my newbie ways, by the end of the day i had not one, but two spoons and a spatula that at the beginning of the day were just logs, i will never look at a wooden spoon in the same way again.
    oh yes, they are not kidding when they say "copious" amounts of tea, can do nothing but recommend this course to anyone who want to learn how to turn a piece of wood into something not only beautiful but useful too.
